Of all the burgeoning Macau tourism development, perhaps the most promising and significant to Macau travel is the massive land reclamation project known as the Cotai Strip. “Cotai” is a blend of the names of the two islands it joins together, Coloane and Taipa. A bridge connecting China's Zhuhai to Cotai will include a border gate, giving Cotai strip first crack at a large chunk of the mainland tourist trade that comprises more than half of the visitors to Macau. Within a decade, Cotai Strip could be the home to up to 25 resort-casinos. Las Vegas Sands Inc.'s Cotai project, called The Venetian Macau, is a 7.5 million sq. ft. resort which opened August 28, 2007. Initially it will house 1,500 rooms, a convention and exhibition center, a 12,000-capacity indoor stadium, and a 250,000 sq. ft. shopping center. When fully completed, the Venetian will have 4,000 rooms. The Venetian will anchor a one kilometer stretch of resorts, according to the Sands' plan. Phase one includes six more branded resort hotels, including a Four Seasons, a Hilton, an Intercontinental and a Marriott. Just beyond that, a partnership between Stanley Ho's son Lawrence and Australian Kerry Packer's Publishing and Broadcasting Limited is building "City of Dreams", including three more hotels with 2,000 rooms, plus hundreds of apartments, its own shopping mall and a 4,000-seat theater. Those buildings will seem to float in a lagoon that also provides atmosphere for an underwater casino. Galaxy will open another urban casino and hotel, called StarWorld (next to Wynn's urban casino project), in a 33-story building with a casino podium comprising 100 VIP rooms, 140 gaming tables, and 300 slot machines. Galaxy's resort casino project on Cotai will have 300 gaming tables, a resort hotel and a convention center. Wynn Resorts Macau opened the first phase of Wynn Macau in 2006. The resort a Mediterranean-style, flagship resort village on the Outer Harbor New Land Reclamation (NAPE), Taipa Island, comprised a 600-to 800-room hotel, a casino, restaurants and facilities for entertainment, shows and leisure activities. Stanley Ho’s SJM has negotiated with MGM-Mirage to form a new casino venture, also to be built on reclaimed land in Macau's Outer Harbour. A refurbishment of the Hotel Lisboa is also underway. SJM will also be planning gaming venues within its USD100 million tourist attraction on the Inner Harbor called "Fisherman's Wharf." Macau continues to prosper and grow, and many more changes should still be expected. Hopefully, you will find your stay exciting, whether now or in the future. |
