Macau Pools

Macau weather allows swimming virtually year-round.  The climate is generally sunny and warm, if not hot and humid. Even the winter months of January to March are generally cold but sunny, and many Macau swimming pools are heated and open regardless of season.  There are many wonderful hotel pools, local pools and beaches to enjoy on your Macau vacation.

Both Cheoc Van Beach and Hác-Sá Beach are popular with swimmers and sunbathers. The water is clean, although it often appears brown because of silt from the Pearl River. Cheoc Van Beach occupies a sheltered cove on the west side of Coloane Island. At one end is a sandy swimming beach with changing facilities and a snack bar, and at the other is a free-form swimming pool. The Nautical Club, a marina where members keep various types of recreational watercraft, is near the beach. There is also a youth hostel, a pousada (inn), and two restaurants with terraces overlooking the water.

Beyond Cheoc Van is Hác-Sá Beach, where the long beach, with its unique black-tinged sand ("hac sa" means "black sand") invites walking by the sea. Along the beach are a youth hostel, the Youth Centre for Water Sports, and the  Hác-Sá  Sports and Recreation Complex with an Olympic-size swimming pool, children's pool, tennis courts, and a sports field. There are also playgrounds, picnic and camping areas, and a variety of snack stands, cafes, and restaurants.

At the Hác-Sá Reservoir, behind the Hác-Sá Picnic Park on the main road above the beach, the new Water Activities Centre offers pedal boat rentals, a refreshment pavilion, and a fitness circuit which runs through the wooded area around the reservoir. A long swinging bridge provides pedestrian access from the parking area.

Macau hotels have many luxurious pools and services to offer, as well. For example, at the Westin Macau there are full spa services (good facials and pampering for the ladies) and a large, staffed fitness center. There is an indoor pool and Jacuzzi. However, the star of the property is the outdoor pool. Tiled in Mediterranean style (due to the former Portuguese influence), the outdoor pools are a joy for relaxing. Little bridges that you can swim under connect two pools. There are plenty of nice wooden lounge chairs and umbrellas. For fun, the pool bar offers frisbees with bar menus printed on them.

The Holiday Inn Macau is also a convenient place to work out your body and mind. The hotel provides a Romanesque-style, heated indoor swimming pool, open year-round, a well-equipped gym and a spa with sauna, steam bath, Jacuzzi and cold plunge. It is a relaxing place to relieve tension or strain created by the inevitable pressures of the day, and to strengthen your outlook in the morning. Holiday Inn Macau's Fitness Centre and Spa is located on the fourth floor of the hotel.

At the luxurious Mandarin Oriental, you can now take advantage of some of the best leisure facilities in the world. The Resort, our brand new world-class sports and leisure complex is on your doorstep, providing a "MediterAsian" experience for all the family.  Located on 15,000 square meters, it provides a wide range of activities, from gentle to vigorous. Set amidst landscaped gardens with a waterfall that cascades into a temperature-controlled swimming pool, The Resort is the perfect place to exercise, or just lie back and watch others at play.

These are but a few examples of the Macau hotel pools available to Macau vacationers. Macau also has several public pools that are safe and enjoyable for swimming. Check out the popular Municipal swimming pool, located in Estrada da Vitória, or the Carmo swimming pool, on Rua da Restauração, Taipa Island.  One way or another, you are sure to find a Macau pool or swimming hole that will help you unwind and refresh yourself for a night on the town or at one of the Macau casinos.
